The Story of Young Muhammad and His Wisdom:

When Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) was a young boy, he lived in Mecca with his family. Even at a young age, he was known for his honesty and fairness, which were qualities that made him stand out among the other children in his community.

Caring for the Family’s Sheep:

In those days, many children in Mecca had responsibilities, and young Muhammad was no different. One of his duties was to take care of his family’s sheep. This was a job that required patience, gentleness, and careful attention, all of which Muhammad showed from an early age. While tending to the sheep, Muhammad would often reflect on the world around him, observing the beauty of nature and the order of creation. This time alone with the sheep was also a time for him to develop his character, learning to be responsible and compassionate.

The Fair Arbitrator:

Even as a child, Muhammad was recognized for his honesty and trustworthiness. He would often play with other children in Mecca, and whenever there was a disagreement or a game that required someone to act as a judge, the children would choose Muhammad. They knew that he would be fair and just, giving each child a fair chance and resolving disputes in a way that satisfied everyone. This early role as an arbitrator showed the wisdom and fairness that would later define his role as a prophet.

The Dispute Over the Black Stone:

One of the most famous stories from Muhammad’s early life involves the rebuilding of the Kaaba, the sacred structure in Mecca that is central to Islamic worship. The Kaaba had been damaged by floods, and the various tribes of Mecca worked together to rebuild it. However, when it came time to place the Black Stone, a sacred stone that was to be set into one corner of the Kaaba, the tribes began to argue.

Each tribe wanted the honor of placing the stone, and the disagreement threatened to lead to conflict. To avoid fighting, the elders of Mecca decided that the next person to enter the area would decide what to do. By Allah’s will, that person was young Muhammad.

The elders explained the situation to Muhammad and asked him to make a decision. Muhammad, demonstrating his wisdom and fairness, proposed a solution that satisfied everyone. He asked for a large cloth to be brought, and he placed the Black Stone in the center of the cloth. Then, he asked a representative from each tribe to hold a corner of the cloth, and together, they lifted the stone to the proper height. Finally, Muhammad personally set the stone in its place.

This solution was so clever and just that it not only resolved the conflict but also earned Muhammad the respect and admiration of everyone present. It was a clear sign of the wisdom and justice that he would continue to demonstrate throughout his life as a prophet.

This story highlights how even as a child, Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) was recognized for his fairness, wisdom, and dedication to justice. These qualities would later define his prophethood and his role as a guide for all of humanity.

Before the first revelation, Muhammad was known for his honesty, strong moral character, and deep spiritual contemplation. He was known in Mecca as Al-Amin, meaning “the trustworthy,” because of his honesty and reliability. As he grew older, he became increasingly concerned about the moral and social issues in Meccan society, including the widespread idol worship, injustice, and mistreatment of the poor and vulnerable.

To seek solace and guidance, Muhammad often retreated to the Cave of Hira on Mount Noor, just outside Mecca. When Muhammad was 40 years old, during one of his retreats to the Cave of Hira in the month of Ramadan, he experienced a profound and awe-inspiring event. It was in this cave that the Angel Gabriel (Jibril in Arabic) appeared to him, marking the beginning of his prophethood. This moment is referred to as the first revelation.

The Angel Gabriel approached Muhammad and commanded him to “Read” or “Recite” (the Arabic word “Iqra” can mean both). Muhammad, who was unlettered and had never learned to read or write, replied, “I am not able to read.” The angel then embraced him tightly and repeated the command two more times. After the third time, the angel brought down the initial verses of the Quran, the holy book of Islam:
Declare in the name of your Allah who created—
Created man from a clinging substance.
Speak, for your Lord is the most Generous.—
Who taught by the pen—
Taught man that which he knew not.”
(Quran, Surah Al-Alaq 96:1-5)
